Helix is a software platform that is targeted to device manufacturers and ASPs and allows them to create Web applications with the ability to interact directly with the user's client-side devices or operating system. A Helix-enabled device and application, for example, could sense the need for device driver updates and supply them automatically, or enable a Web site to retrieve images directly from an end user's digital camera through their Web browser connection.
The Helix software operates as a small-footprint "micro application server" on the target client which provides a browser independent, client-side API allowing Web application developers to access and manipulate client-side devices and systems. More than a browser plug-in, the Helix software actually runs on the operating system level and therefore supplies interaction capabilities beyond the standard functions of the browser itself. Because it can interact with the client O/S, Helix software can be used to offload processing typically provided by ASPs at the server level. The Helix client, for example, can validate data input locally, process XSL transformations, provide long-term object persistence, and offer support for SSL communication processing.
To insure the security of the client's Helix engine, all scripts delivered to the client from a server must be licensed with a digital signature scheme protected by 128bit encryption. Scripts delivered to the client from untrusted sources will not be executed.
Helix is available now. For further information, contact NewHeights Software Corp.
