The TechWriter product line are Windows desktop applications that provide the ability to auto-generate documentation in multiple environments. Features common to the tools include:
- Multiple output choices (HTML Help, PDF, RTF/Word and Web site)
- A tabbed user interface
- Allows tech writers to enhance the generated doc with additional information that is not overwritten on subsequent revisions
- Documentation can be targeted towards different audiences by controlling what information is included (exclude different objects, elements, attributes, types by checking a box; set up rules to exclude information; control the level of detail)
- Automatically detects changes and updates the documentation to match
Currently among the separately available products are:
- TechWriter for Web Services automatically generates documentation for Web Services. It collects information about the methods, elements, attributes and types directly from the WSDL that defines the service.
- TechWriter for Databases automatically generates documentation for database tables, views, functions and procedures. It supports Access, SQL Server and Oracle. Information is collected directly from the DB itself.
- TechWriter for XML Schemas generates documentation for XML Schema Definitions (XSDs) and XML DTDs. It collects information about the elements, attributes and types directly from the XML schema itself.
