2X TerminalServer is a Linux-based terminal server that allows end users to access their personal Linux desktop environments from remote locations. The product is a free, open source download; licensed under the GPL.
2X TerminalServer is supported on Red Hat, SUSE, and "more" Linux distributions; and communicates with the end user clients via the open source NX protocol. NX is an X-Windows Compression protocol that, according to the vendor, allows the end user to run an X-Windows based desktop environment even over dial-up links. In addition to the native NX protocol support, the vendor also notes that 2X TerminalServer is capable of translating and tunneling VNC and Microsoft's RDP protocols, providing client access to other terminal services and applications based on those protocols.
In addition to Linux, the vendor expects that NX clients will be available for Windows and other end user machines; stating that "very soon" they will release an open source client for Windows with other platforms to follow. Both KDE and Gnome are supported. Communications are based on SSH.
As an open source offering, direct support is not provided by the vendor. However, forums are provided (hosted by the vendor) where direct user-to-user support could possibly be obtained.
2X TerminalServer is a free download and is available now. Contact 2X Software for further information.
