HASP

Software Licensing and Distribution Protection Platform

Aladdin's HASP is a collection of tools that enable software vendors to automate the licensing process for customers who purchase their applications as well as protect their distributed applications from unauthorized usages and duplication. The platform offers the ability to authenticate to distributed software applications via software-based protection or USB/Parallel port hardware-token based authentication schemes). The primary flavor of HASP is HASP SRM, which is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux (SuSE, Red Hat; Linux support for HASP was previously only available in HASP HL) and itself contains multiple components including HASP HL (hardware-based protection), HASP SL (software-based protection), HASP SRM Vendor Suite (programmer tool set, including the HASP SRM API), and the HASP SRM Business Studio, which allows product marketers and managers to lock applications to a hardware or software key after the core protective layer has been applied by the developers. I.E., in HASP SRM software engineers need only tool their product once and release a single binary; with either software or hardware licensing schemes applied as needed after-the-fact by decision makers via point and click methods.

The hardware-based authentication provides application protection in the form of a hardware key that must be inserted in the user's computer in order for the application to function. The individual hardware keys are self-contained chips that provide on-board AES 128 encryption (the encryption key therefore never leaves the hardware token) with unique responses for authentication.

Multiple keys are available, from a single license key to keys supporting 233 separate licenses. Keys are available both for individual PCs and for networks (HASP HL NET, where the key can be inserted in any computer in the network). Specialized keys include a time based key (contains an on-board clock that allows software to be activated or deactivated by time or date), a combination network and time key, and HASP HL Drive, which includes writable Flash memory (4 GB) and can therefore be used to store personal information. All keys connect via USB, with support for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux systems.

For software-based authentication schemes, HASP SRM-enabled applications electronically transmit (via SSL-protected connections) the product key to the customer's (the vendor that developed the application) deployment of the HASP SRM Business Studio Server, which returns a HASP SL key that is then installed directly on the end-user's PC. This key includes the product's license terms, and is managed by product managers via the HASP SRM Business Studio.
