Fantom Drives

External Drive Line with USB, FireWire, eSATA Interfaces

The Fantom Drives brand from MicroNet Technology is primarily a brand of external disk drives that are offered in various interface configurations; including combinations of FireWire, USB, and eSATA interfaces. Two primary product families are offered in the brand: The Titanium II drives, and the G-Force drives.

The Titanium II drives are themselves currently offered in two configurations: The Titanium II USB drive, and the Titanium II USB + FireWire drive. The USB drive (and indeed, all of the USB drives in the Fantom collection) supports USB 2.0 (backwards compatible to 1.1) with maximum bus transfer speeds of up to 60 MB/sec (the maximum sustained transfer rate of the Titanium II USB is listed at 28 MB/sec). The single drive design is offered in capacities from 250 GB to 1 TB, with cache buffers of from 8 to 16 MB, and prices from about $90 to $300. The FireWire + USB version of the drive adds a FireWire interface and is offered in four capacities (250 - 750 GB) with pricing ranging from about $110 to $280.

Also available in the Titanium line is are the Titanium Mini USB drives, handheld sized drives with capacities of 80 to 16o GB and prices ranging from $80 to $110.

The G-Force drives are offered in several configurations (and each configuration in several capacities). Current entries in the line include:

- G-Force MegaDisk: A USB 2 drive with capacities of from 1 to 2 TB, cache buffers of 16 or 32 MB, and prices from $290 to $540. The maximum sustained data transfer rate is listed at 34 MB/sec.

- G-Force MegaDisk Triple Interface: Similar to the above G-Force MegaDisk, but with additional FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 interfaces. The FW800 interface lists a maximum sustained transfer rate of 75 MB/sec. Pricing ranges from $320 to $650.

- G-Force MegaDisk NAS, a network attached (Gig Ethernet) drive with support for CIFS/SMB, NFS, and FTP connectivity. RAID protection is offered at levels of 0 or 1. The NAS drive ships in capacities of from 1 to 2 TB (all with 32 MB buffers), and pricing ranging from $350 to $780. Bundled with the NAS drive is a copy of NTI's Shadow backup software (Windows, Mac), which supports both continuous and scheduled backups.

- G-Force eSATA/USB Drive, with both eSATA and USB interfaces. These single drive designs are offered in capacities of from 250 GB to 1 TB, cache buffers from 8 to 16 MB, and pricing from $120 to $320.

- The G-Force Quad Interface is similar to the G-Force eSATA/USB, but adds FireWire (400 and 800) interfaces. It's offered in three capacities (500 GB to 1 TB) ranging in price from $190 to $370.

- The G-Force MegaDisk eSATA/USB is the newest entry in the line, offering both eSATA and USB interfaces in drives ranging in capacity from 1 to 2 TB. All the configurations boast 32 MB buffers and support for RAID (0, 1) protection; as well as include the NTI Shadow software described above. Pricing ranges from $330 to $650, and the maximum sustained transfer rate (over eSATA) is listed as better than 100 MB/sec.
