USB Flash and Portable Hard Drives To 500 GB

The Memorex TravelDrive product line is targeted to mobile users, and consists of USB connected Flash or HDD drives in capacities ranging from 512 MB to 500 GB.

The original TravelDrive is a portable, external Flash drive that can be inserted into the USB (1.1, 2.0) port of a computer (Windows, Mac, and Linux are supported), providing it with portable data storage. The smaller ("Mini") TravelDrives are small enough to hang from a key chain and are offered in capacities up to 4 GB; the bigger entry is slightly larger and boasts up to 8 GB of capacity. The "Mini" TravelDrives are offered in standard and U3-enabled flavors.

The TravelDrives additionally include the ReadyBoost feature, especially for use with Windows Vista. ReadyBoost allows the PC to use the drive as additional system memory.

Other entries among the Flash-based TravelDrive products include:

- The M-Flyer Pilot, which features a retractable USB connector that pops out by depressing the back of the drive. Once removed from a USB port, the USB connector can be popped back into its casing. Capacity is 2 GB.

- The RotoDrive, a swiveling (capless) drive offered in capacities of 512 MB, 1 and 2 GB.

Beyond the Flash-based drives described above, the vendor also offers HDD-based TravelDrives, including the "Mega" TravelDrive, and the "Ultra" TravelDrive.

The Mega TravelDrive is just less than 2 inches square for the smaller (4, 6, 8 GB) drives, and features a flip-out USB connector. The drive is offered in capacities of 4, 6, 8, and 12 GB; the 12 GB version is slightly longer. The Ultra TravelDrive is based on 2.5 inch drive technology and is offered in 80, 120, 160, 250, 320, and now 500 GB capacities with a palm-sized design and a weight of about half a pound.

Flash-based TravelDrives range in price from about $20 (512 MB) to $150 (TravelDrive, 8 GB); while the Mega and Ultra drives range from about $50 (Ultra, 80 GB) to $300 (Ultra, 500 GB). All prices are suggested retail price.
