MILAN Switches

Managed and Unmanaged Offerings in Multiple Configurations

Formerly a separate organization and now a brand of Transition Networks (Transition Networks and the former MiLAN Technology were both wholly owned subsidiaries of Communications Systems, Inc.), the MILAN product line encompasses both managed and unmanaged switch offerings targeted primarily to small to medium sized networks. There are multiple switches in the product line, ranging in density from 4 to 48 ports and including both Fast and Gig Ethernet ports in both Fiber and copper flavors; some switches include combinations of these features (such as the new MIL-SEM24T4GPA described below).

As of this writing, better than 40 switches are available under the MILAN umbrella. A quartet of SFP and GBIC modules are also available in the line for those switches that accommodate them.

Features of the switches include Auto-MDIX and auto negotiation; non-blocking operation; Jumbo frames support; SNMP v1/2/3; VLAN, QoS, and IGMP support; DHCP Client/Servers; and more. Not all features are available on all switches, however; see the vendor's MILAN site for full details. Additionally, some switches include PoE support over some or all of their included ports.

The newest models in the MILAN line include:

- MIL-S4800: An unmanaged switch with 48 10/100 ports, a single 10/100/1000 Base-TX port and a single SFP port. Features include an internal power supply.

- MIL-SM4004TG: A Layer 2 managed switch with 4 10/100/1000 and 4 Gig SFP ports. Management is via Web GUI, CLI, or menu-based commands accessed by telnet or an included serial console port.

- MIL-SEM24T4GPA: Also a Layer 2managed switch (Web GUI, CLI, telnet) with 20 10/100/1000 BaseTX and 4 10/100/1000Base-TX/Gigabit SFP combo ports.

Visit the vendor's MILAN brand Web site for further details.
