SecureSpot (DSD-150)

Central Spam Identification, Anti-Virus, More for Small Office

Powered by BSecure Technologies, D-Link's SecureSpot is a desktop form-factor security device targeted to small office implementations. The vendor bills the device as being a combination of network hardware and client software; providing both network (perimeter) and PC-level protection from viruses, spam, spyware, and more while supporting centralized management and control via a Web-accessible console.

The device is installed in the network inline--between the broadband modem and the network router--and supports the management of both Windows (2000/XP) and Mac OS (10.3/10.4) endpoints. The vendor states that all brands of routers are supported. A Web-accessible console provides for the central management of individual or all PCs on the network; with the ability to set virus scan times, protective services, and other tasks for one or all machines. The databases used for virus definitions, URL filtering, spyware and spam servers as well as the network tools themselves are automatically updated.

SecureSpot features and capabilities include:

- Content filtering: allows users to choose from among 82 site filtering categories (with the additional ability to block/unblock specific sites). Application filtering (P2P, IM, etc.) is also supported.

- Anti-virus filtering, courtesy of Sophos

- Pop-up management: Can be customized by adding new additions to the pop-up control database

- Built-in firewall, including a "Phishing Protection" feature that blocks/alerts you about E-mails attempting to get personal information

- Spyware protection

- Spam identification: E-mail filtering based on the tagging of suspected spam E-mails. Suspect E-mails are automatically tagged with a user defined prefix (in the subject line) before being delivered to the user

- Identity protection: Automatic notification/confirmation when specified sensitive information (SSN, credit card, etc.) is sent. The sensitive information to be monitored for is entered in the Web management console

- Auditing and reporting: Web history is captured by the appliance; and a reporting area allows for the configuration and management of Internet activity reports that can contain date, time, Web site visited, Web site category, etc.

SecureSpot is now available. The MSRP is $99.99, which includes one-year licenses for up to four computers. After the first year, licensing for up to four computers will cost $79.99 per year. Additional annual user licenses can be purchased for $19.99 each.
