Formerly from NeoScale and now owned by nCipher (who themselves are now owned by Thales), CryptoStor Tape provides rule-based access policy enforcement and data-at-rest encryption for data storage. According to the vendor, the appliance is installed inline in the network and provides wire-speed encryption and application-transparent operation. Management is via Web GUI and CLI.
The appliance is able to inspect storage traffic flowing through it and apply data access controls and encryption to payload data based on administrator defined rules. Such rules can be defined using identifiers including WWN, SID, DID, LUN, Volume, SCSI command, and block range. Encryption is via 3DES/AES 128/AES 256.
CryptoStor Tape dynamically traps backup and restore communications between hosts and tape libraries; compressing, encrypting and digitally signing data as it goes to the tape media. The product is available in 2U 2 or 4 port Fibre Channel flavors (1/2 Gb/sec) and a 2 port LVD SCSI 320 model.
