OfficeScan is a host-based anti-malware product that can be centrally managed via a Web-based console. Separate licensing is provided for clients and servers; with client components requiring Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista machines, while servers require Windows 2000 Server or Server 2003 with IIS or Apache. Native processing is supported on both 32 and 64-bit systems. For Vista, in particular, the vendor notes that the product is Vista certified; leveraging Windows Vista Security Center and other Vista features.
The OfficeScan management console provides for the central management of both desktop and server versions of the product; it (the management console) is included with both client and client/server licenses. Further, multiple OfficeScan installations can be controlled and managed by the vendor's Trend Micro Control Manager (a separate product, not included with OfficeScan), enabling multi-tier management for large installations. Trend Micro Control Manager can also be used to manage many of the vendor's other security offerings.
OfficeScan provides endpoint-based anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-rootkit, firewall, and "Web threat" protection. The vendor states that protection is provided against viruses, trojans, worms, and new variants as they emerge; as well as spyware and grayware scanning. Rootkits can be detected and removed; and the vendor additionally notes that both processes and registry entries infected with malware that are hidden or locked can be cleansed.
"Web threat" protection, in particular, seeks to block access to URLs that have been determined by the vendor to partake in malicious activities based on their reputation ratings. Such ratings are based on malware, spam, and spyware activity; and are updated in real-time by reference to the vendor's own database ("with millions of dynamically rated sites").
An additional feature of OfficeScan is its plug-in based architecture, which the vendor states enables the addition of new security features in the future without requiring a redeployment of the entire package (Plug-ins can be deployed to live clients through the central management console.) The first such plug-in made available by the vendor for the product is the new Intrusion Defense Firewall, which adds a stateful packet inspection engine (incoming and outgoing network traffic) with the ability to watch for protocol deviations, suspicious traffic, or security policy violations. Support is also provided for the creation of custom traffic filters.
OfficeScan pricing is $32.34 per user, for 501-1000 users; the Intrusion Defense Firewall is priced at $16.17 for 501-1000 users.
