Option's GlobeSurfers are broadband WAN access routers and devices facilitating access to 3G networks from local devices.
On the WAN side of the box, the devices connect to UMTS (including HSDPA) and (E)GPRS networks; and on the LAN side both standard Ethernet (10/100) and wireless devices (802.11 b/g) can connect to the routers/devices. The products are targeted to homes, small businesses, temporary connections, mobile hot spots, etc.
The routers in the GlobeSurfer family share multiple features, including DHCP and DNS servers, stateful packet inspection firewall, NAT support, VPN features (VPN passthrough, PPTP and IPSec client and server, L2TP client), and MAC Address filtering. A built in USB port complements the Ethernet ports and provides support for printer or external drive sharing.
The 10/100 port of the routers feature Auto MDIX; while 802.11 b/g connectivity boasts protection through WEP, WPA, and WPA2. The WLAN radio can be optionally disabled altogether.
Two versions of the broadband router are now available. The GlobeSurfer III offers support for UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA and GSM/GPRS networks and can additionally itself be used as a cellphone; while the new GlobeSurfer X.1 instead accepts a USB cell modem (3G/HSPA) for connectivity to the cellular network.
