Proxim Wireless Backhaul

Point-to-Point Wireless LAN Extension for Carriers, Providers, Campuses

Proxim's wireless backhaul product line is offered under multiple brand names (each targeted to particular market segments) and provides to carriers, providers, and distributed Enterprise campuses the ability to bridge their network communications between buildings wirelessly. The products operate as point-to-point network extensions (a radio is deployed at both ends of the connection) with connectivity supported for multiple interface types (including Ethernet, OC3/OC12, T1, and E1) and actual data transmission occurring through multiple licensed and unlicensed frequencies (depending on model). Transmissions are protected via built-in (hardware-based) AES encryption. Among the brands listed in the category are the GigaLink, TeraOptic, TeraBridge, Tsunami.GX, Tsunami QuickBridge, and Lynx (GX and G5) products.

- The GigaLinks are billed as an alternative to Fiber runs, and provide full duplex communications over short-to-medium outdoor ranges (20 to 8,200 meters under ideal conditions, depending on model). The GigaLinks boast connection speeds of 125 (10/100) Mb/sec, 155 (OC-3/STM-1) Mb/sec, or 1.25 Gb/sec over multiple models supporting data delivery in either the 57-64 GHz unlicensed frequency band or the licensed 71-76 GHz licensed frequency band.

- The TeraOptic 4221e uses free space optics instead of RF communications, delivering 125 Mb/sec communications from 20 meters to 1 kilometer. The bridge operates at a 850 nm wavelength.

- The Lynx.GX series devices are offered in a split-box form factor (they can be installed all indoors, or in indoor/outdoor unit pairs) and are targeted primarily to cellular providers or for Enterprise PBX campus extensions. They operate in the 5,725 - 5,850 MHz band at ranges of about 27 to 36 miles and with connection speeds of 12 to 50 Mb/sec. Interfacing is via T1 (DSX1/RJ-45) or E1 (BNC).

- Also a split box design, the Tsunami.GX series devices offer 32 to 216 Mb/sec connections over ranges of up to 44 miles. They operate in the 5.250-5.350 GHz or 5.725-5.850 GHz spectrums, and are interfaced with 10/100 (T or FX) connections. Dual Wayside T1/E1 (DSX-1 or CEPT-1) channels are also supported.

- The newest entries in the line, the Lynx.G5 boxes are billed as a merger between the Lynx.GX and Tsunami.GX products, offering the user their choice of software selectable spectrums in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands (2.4 – 2.4835, 5.25 – 5.35, 5.47 – 5.725, 5.725 – 5.850, 5.15 – 6.08, 5.825 – 5.875, and 5.85 - 5.95, depending on country of deployment) in bandwidths of 5, 10, or 20 MHz. Like the Lynx.GX, the Lynx.G5 can be deployed in an all-indoor or indoor/outdoor configuration, with range listed at up to 15 miles (24 miles when using a 5.8 GHz outdoor unit). Two models are available: One with 4 T1/E1 interfaces and the other with 8 T1s. Both models also include a 10/100 port.

- The TeraBridge is an all outdoor model operating in the 5.8 GHz band and offered with a choice of DS-3 or 10/100 interface. Range is listed as up to 40 miles, with connection speeds of 45 Mb/sec (full duplex).

- The QuickBridge product line are outdoor units now offered in two camps: The Tsunami QuickBridge.11s, which themselves leveraged the vendor's Tsunami MP.11 technology; and the QuickBridge 60250 offering (no Tsunami moniker; more below). The QuickBridge 60250 operates in the 60 GHz spectrum and delivers communications up to 200 Mb/sec. Range is listed as up to 500 meters. QuickBridge connectivity is via 10/100 Ethernet, and operation is in the 2.4, 4.9, 5.15-5.35, 5.47-5.725, and 5.8 GHz spectrums.
